It has all the elements for a perfect grain salad. Together with toasted almonds, peppery arugula and fresh basil it offers so many flavour and textural elements. Sweet, tart, salty, nutty and umami. And it makes a perfect side dish or meal on its own.<\/p>\n<h2>Gr\u00fcnkern: more than just a side dish<\/h2>\n<p>Anyone who follows my blog knows how much I love salads of all kinds \u2014 including grain salads. <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gr%C3%BCnkern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Gr\u00fcnkern<\/a> (spelt grains harvested young, then dried and smoked) is especially a favourite choice. It has a nutty flavour and is a little sweeter than spelt. Plus, since it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/what-is-spelt-and-is-it-healthier-for-me-than-wheat-1882198500.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">rich in protein and fibre<\/a>, it makes a very meal-worthy salad. Even if its enjoyed as a side it pairs well with other salads. I like to serve it with a <a href=\"https:\/\/ellerepublic.de\/en\/tomato-caper-salad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tomato and caper salad<\/a>, as well as a <a href=\"https:\/\/ellerepublic.de\/en\/easy-potato-salad-recipe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">simple potato salad<\/a> for a plant-based meal that offers lots of different flavors.
