Now that my favorite Schwabe has come to the realization that papayas are powerfully healthy, he’s been on a bit of a papaya fix. At the market last week we bought a whoppingly huge one for 13€. Bigger than an eggplant but smaller than your average watermelon, that thing was huge! So what ensued was three days of engorging ourselves on incredibly delicious papaya!
I decided to skip using any of the seeds this time around, though favorite Schwabe decided it was a bad idea and unloaded about a half a cups worth of crushed seeds on his salad. Emmm, overload you think? How’s that tasting for you? Yep, a little over the top. Definitely saw that one coming. All the time, I was thinking, hmmm I know he read that article about papaya seeds being a good form of natural birth control, particularly in men… Remember, he already has three boys. Nevertheless if you are a big fan of their peppery taste, go for it. They are also packed with digestive enzymes, just like the fruit.
The salad itself, spectacular. I love summer salads and fruit in salads. Okay this papaya avocado salad is pretty close to being considered a fruit salad. But anyone who knows me well, knows I love any kind of salad! Serve with grilled chicken or fish for a fabulous summer meal.
Be sure to buy a ripe papaya for this salad (although you can eat them unripe green variations too). You’ll know it’s ripe if it the skin has some yellow color and it is slightly soft. If it’s not quite ripe enough, then put it in a paper bag, on the counter, to speed up the process. It will continue to ripen at room temperature.
