Cacao Banana Espresso Smoothie

So you know how I made that delicious coconut-lime cabbage and mango salad and skimmed off the thick layer of coconut cream from the can of coconut milk, well here’s what I did with it. I created a super delicious breakfast smoothie with a caffeine kick and cacao bliss effect. A cacao banana espresso smoothie.

Coconut, bananas and chocolate go together like a dream. Maca adds its own magic. And all you need is 5 minutes, a few ingredients, and a blender.

I also added some protein powder to this smoothie to really give my day the much needed kick start! It’s always around the middle of the month when I especially need an extra boost to ramp up my concentration levels and energy. Every month there are a handful of work days that are entirely dedicated to the creation of endless spreadsheets full of figures to analyse, follow-up on and then shape into a meaningful report which hopefully someone reads — my monthly reporting cycle. Not only does this smoothie help me get through the day but here is one of the songs that also helps keep me going:

Organic coconut cream and coconut mousse are sold in organic food stores. Otherwise, you can scoop out the firm layer of coconut cream that has solidified at the top of a can of coconut milk. You’ll find that quality brands of coconut milk will have a thick cream that separates and rises to the top while the water accumulates at the bottom of the can. The watery goodness left after you skim the cream can also be saved and used in your next smoothie, Thai curry or in a salad dressing as I did.

Cacao Banana Espresso Smoothie

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk (250 ml)
  • 1 tablespoon coconut cream or coconut mousse
  • 2 tablespoons raw cacao powder
  • 1 scoop plant-based protein powder (such as Garden of Life or SunWarrior)
  • 1 teaspoon maca powder (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh brewed espresso
  • 2 large ripe bananas
  • 8 ice cubes

Method

  1. Combine all ingredients in a blender and puree until smooth. Pour into glasses and serve.
  2. Drink and feel awesome!

Notes

If you use frozen banana, skip the ice cubes!
